‘We want justice but … ‘: CM Mamata on BJP’s 12-hour Bengal Bandh call | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused the BJP of conspiring to obstruct the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.During her address at the TMCP foundation day, Mamata expressed her opposition to BJP’s 12-hour shutdown call in Bengal, stating, “We don’t support this bandh.BJP never demanded the resignations of the CMs of UP, MP and even Manipur. We saw pictures from yesterday (Nabanna Abhiyan rally), I salute the police for handling the situation well.””We have dedicated this day to the RG Kar doctor. We want justice but BJP today called for a bandh. They don’t want justice, they are only trying to defame Bengal,” she added. She further alleged that the BJP’s bandh was an attempt to tarnish Bengal’s reputation.”BJP”s bandh aimed at defaming Bengal, it is plotting conspiracy to derail probe into RG Kar hospital rape-murder case, We have dedicated this day to the RG Kar doctor. We want justice but BJP today called for a bandh. They don’t want justice, they are only trying to defame Bengal,” she said.Mamata also said that her government is planning to introduce a bill in the assembly that would ensure capital punishment for rapists.”Next week, we will call an assembly session and pass a Bill within 10 days to ensure capital punishment for rapists. We will send this Bill to the Governor. If he doesn’t pass, we will sit outside Raj Bhavan. This Bill must be passed and he cannot evade accountability this time,” she said.”If the state government had power, we would have ensured capital punishment for the accused in the doctor’s murder within 7 days. For this, there is only one punishment- to hang till death,” she added.Mamata’s comments came on the same day that the BJP called for a ‘dawn-to-dusk’ strike to protest the alleged police brutality against participants of the march to the state secretariat, Nabbana. The protesters demanded the resignation of chief minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
