Dr. Sunil Chaturvedi: A Life Dedicated to Water Conservation

For more than 30 years, Dr. Sunil Chaturvedi has been quietly working on one of India’s biggest challenges, water conservation. As a hydrogeologist and social reformer, he has combined science with ground-level action. His work across Madhya Pradesh has helped thousands of farmers, students, and communities understand and protect their water resources.

Making People Understand Water

Dr. Chaturvedi leads the Jal Saksharta Abhiyan, a campaign focused on spreading awareness about water. Through school visits, workshops, and community meetings, the initiative has already reached over 35,000 students.

He believes that real change begins when people understand the value of water. Students are encouraged to become “water ambassadors” and take small but meaningful actions in their homes and neighborhoods.

To make learning easier, he wrote a book titled Jal, published by Vijnana Bharati. It explains important topics like rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge in simple language. He also created the “Pani Anmol” program for children, using activities to teach conservation.

Turning Awareness into Action

In 2023 and 2024, he started the Amrit Sanchay Abhiyan in Dewas. What began as a local effort soon became a citywide movement.

People from all walks of life participated. Citizens, local authorities, and organizations came together with one goal, saving water.

The results were impressive:

  • Over 400 water conservation structures were built
  • Around 250 crore liters of rainwater were stored underground

The success of Dewas inspired similar campaigns in districts like Khandwa.

A Model That Changed a City

Years earlier, Dewas had faced a serious water crisis. During that time, Dr. Chaturvedi introduced a simple idea. Every rooftop could collect rainwater.

Between 1999 and 2001, more than 2000 households adopted this method. The impact was clear:

  • Groundwater levels rose by 3 to 5 meters
  • Water quality improved
  • Around 50,000 cubic meters of water was recharged

The Central Ground Water Board later confirmed these results. The model also received recognition at an international level.

He later improved this system by developing the Horizontal Reverse Filter Technique, which helps water reach underground layers faster while keeping it clean.

Supporting Farmers and Villages

Dr. Chaturvedi has also worked closely with rural communities. Through watershed development programs, he has helped more than 75,000 farmer families across 150 villages.

These efforts created irrigation facilities for nearly 35,000 hectares of land. For many farmers, this meant better crops and a more stable income.

Clean Water and Better Hygiene

His work also includes improving sanitation. In collaboration with organizations like UNICEF, he trained workers to build systems that reuse wastewater.

One of his innovative ideas is a child-friendly handwashing unit for schools. It allows ten children to wash hands at the same time while saving water. The used water is then reused for gardening and sanitation.

Building Knowledge and Community

In 1997, he founded VIBHAVARI, an organization focused on natural resource management. He also helped establish VIHAN near the Punasa Dam area.

Through these platforms, more than 10,000 people have been trained in water conservation and sustainable farming.

He often brings communities together through initiatives like Jal Yatra and Pani Chaupal. These gatherings help people discuss their local water problems and find practical solutions.

A Writer with a Purpose

Apart from his fieldwork, Dr. Chaturvedi is also a Hindi author. His books reflect social issues and environmental concerns. Some of his works include Mahamaya, Kalichaat, Ghafil, and Lapka.

His book Pani De Gud Dhani De received the Medini Award from the Ministry of Environment and Forests. His upcoming novel Tunnel talks about environmental challenges in the Himalayas.

Dr. Sunil Chaturvedi believes that water conservation cannot be solved by science alone. It needs people, awareness, and collective action. His work continues to show how communities can come together to protect something as essential as water.
